Challenge

KS1758 plays a critical role in promoting safe and sustainable practices across Kenya’s horticultural value chains. However, awareness and adoption of the standard remained uneven, with limited understanding among key stakeholders and no unified approach to communication. The fragmented nature of the sector, involving regulators, private sector actors, industry associations, and development partners, further complicated efforts to drive consistent uptake.

Solution

Advoq Consult was engaged to develop a national communication strategy to support awareness and adoption of KS1758. The assignment adopted a consultative and evidence-based approach, beginning with a stakeholder needs assessment to identify awareness gaps, implementation barriers, and priority audiences. Insights from this process informed the development of a structured communication strategy outlining objectives, audience segmentation, key messages, communication channels, and implementation considerations. A validation workshop was subsequently convened to refine the strategy and ensure alignment with sector needs.

Impact

The engagement resulted in a finalised, implementation-ready communication strategy with broad stakeholder alignment. The process strengthened shared understanding of the standard, improved coordination across public and private sector actors, and secured commitment to support dissemination and implementation. The strategy provides a clear framework to guide coordinated engagement and support increased uptake across the horticultural sector.
